Approximately 250,000 children are treated at hospitals for toy related injuries each year. Most of the injuries happen to children under the age of 15. The American Academy of Ophthalmology has some helpful tips to prevent eye injuries this holiday season.
- Avoid buying toys with rigid or sharps.
- Buy toys that are appropriate for the child's age, maturity level, and ability.
- Supervise children while playing.
- Inspect toys before giving them to children.
If an injury occurs, Do Not allow the child to rub or touch their eyes. Don't apply medication to the eye(s). Don't attempt to remove any debris from the eye. Flush the eye with water if there is a chemical involved.
Always seek medical attention immediately for all eye injuries.
